How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Preventing tooth decay should be a top priority for those who want to avoid painful trips to your local dentist, At Imperial Dental Center, we want all of our patients to experience a happy and healthy mouth for their entire lives. That’s why we’ve put together several helpful facts and tips on what tooth decay is and how to prevent it.

What is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay is caused by a bacteria that live in a sticky layer on your teeth called plaque. These bacteria produce acids that can cause the enamel, better known as the surface of a tooth, to wear down. Consequently, as more plaque builds up and around the tooth, more tooth substance is destroyed, causing decay.

People with heavy decay may not always experience pain, but some signs and symptoms include, but are not limited to, sensitivity to hot, cold or even sweet foods; discomfort or pain in or around your mouth and chronically bad breath.

Ways to Help Prevent Tooth Decay

A good way to start the prevention of tooth decay is with a healthy diet such as limiting the number of snacks in between meals and drinking more water, instead of sugary drinks like soda and coffee. Food and drink items containing lots of sugar can contribute to tooth decay.

At Imperial Dental, we stand by the American Dental Association when they suggest that one of the best ways to prevent tooth decay is by brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing after each meal; talking with your dentist about the use of supplemental fluoride or dental sealants; and finally visiting your dentist regularly for dental cleanings and oral examinations.
