Have you put off a dental exam due to COVID-19 concerns? It is understandable if you have but consider that delaying preventive oral care or needed treatment may actually lead to bigger health issues. For example, untreated plaque buildup on our teeth can lead to periodontal disease, a systemic disease that can potentially travel to the lungs causing pneumonia, bronchitis, or other lung infections. Tooth decay and gum disease often occur without symptoms and can be detected early on only by a dentist.
PROTECTING PATIENTS AND STAFF AGAINST CORONAVIRUS
All dental offices must follow protocols established by the Centers for Disease Control and the American Dental Association to protect patients and staff from Coronavirus. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Sterilization and Disinfection of Patient-Care Items.
- Disinfection of treatment rooms, touch surfaces, lobby areas, and others.
- Using appropriate personal protective equipment and protocols.
- Scheduling patients apart to avoid patient-to-patient contact.

TIPS FOR PREVENTIVE ORAL CARE
Brush, Floss, and Rinse
- Brush gums, the roof of the mouth, and tongue 2 times per day for 2 minutes.
- Floss once per day in the evening.
- Gargle with an alcohol-free mouthwash.
Replace Toothbrush/Electric Toothbrush Head
- Every 3 months.
- After any illness.
- When the bristles are frayed and outwardly bent.
